Henrietta

Henrietta was my dad’s cat and I only had the delight of looking after her for 3 years from 2006 to 2009. Just before he died, my dad had asked me whether he I would look after Henrietta after he was gone. I was devastated but determined to look after her to the best of my ability for her sake and Dad's. She showed that she was an affectionate, loving lapcat!

I was a little apprehensive about how Henrietta would get along with Holly my Labrador as she Henrietta seemed quite timid, but I need not have worried as Henrietta soon sorted out the ‘pecking’ order. She had quite a few health problems such as thyroid and heart trouble and was on constant medication. In 2009 I made the fateful mistake that I still feel guilty about – I booked to go on holiday for a week. My friend normally looked after her and did her medication. This year my friend was away Henrietta needed more medication than before for her heart problem. I arranged with a cattery that I knew very well and had used for over 10 years to look after her. Henrietta had to have her medication 3 times a day and went downhill if she missed more than a few doses and I didn’t feel it was fair to ask any of my other friends to come in and handle her 3 times a day to make sure she took her tablets.

I made the wrong decision – the day before we were due to fly back the cattery called to say she was ill. We flew back asap and drove through the early hours of the morning to get to her, but it was too late when I went to collect her she had died in the early hours of the 22nd August in the cattery exactly 3 years to the day I had first brought her home. The guilt I felt about this was enormous, I felt I had let my dad down really badly and it felt as though she had given up and died in the cattery because she thought that I had abandoned her there. I still feel upset and guiltly to this day about getting it wrong. A few months later I thought her death shouldn’t be in vain and I opened my home and my heart to a young rescue cat we called Coco.

RIP Henrietta & Dad – together again
