Rio

All our pets are special but Rio was that exceptional one for me. My first spinone, my first solo puppy, he was a very special boy. He was everyone's friend (whether they wanted him or not), he was an outgoing boy and great fun to live with. He would walk all day, he loved his training but he was just as happy with a cuddle on the sofa, and so patient...bad night on call, late night trip into work, stressful day, he was always happy to come along, happy to see me and a great support. He loved his training classes, 12yrs of class and sometimes he would shine like a star, other times he'd prat around like a clown, always made me smile even if sometimes it was exasperation! Even at 12yrs old we'd get asked "how old is he?" "Twelve" "what? months?", he never really grew up. He developed lymphoma 6wks ago, we were lucky that he was pretty well right to the end and I had time to say goodbye. We had a fantastic week halfway through when he did his farewell tour, going to all the places he loved & giving me some amazing memories. For that I am very very grateful. Every day I realise how many friends he had when someone else asks why he isn't there. I'm still turning round to check on him, the bottom of the bed feels empty without him. But he lived life to the full and he is now at peace, having passed with dignity when he was ready. The pain is just for those of us left behind, he is missed.
The photo shows Rio with Avalon, the Norwegian Forest Cat and his best bud. This is my favourite photo of my boys and shows what good friends they were. We lost Avi 18mths ago and Rio did miss his playmate.
Rio; Italian Spinone, clown, hiking partner, rally dog, companion & most importantly best friend... he will be forever in my heart
