As a recently bereaved cat owner I am now struggling with the decision to have my new rescue kitten spayed. I have googled it and all I get are the pros and cons. I have always had my pets neutered in the past but I have always been anxious about the risks while on the operating table. I could not cope with the loss of my little Lucy and need to know if there are high mortality rates during these types of operations. Thanks.

Hi Rosie,

Very pleased to hear that you have got a new kitten in your life. Sure Lucy is adorable! I am sure you realise that there are no guarantees but I can tell you honestly that the mortality rate during neutering procedures of young healthy cats is very low indeed. The same is also true for any medium-to-long term complications relating to the general anaesthesia. As I say, there are no guarantees but the odds are very much in Lucy's favour for a good outcome.

Take care.
